2020 Kia Telluride vs 2019 Honda Pilot

2020 Kia Telluride Warrington Pa

Kia’s pilot ship this year is an SUV named Telluride. It is a three-row family-sized crossover. Kia made this vehicle larger and more comfortable than it’s predecessor the Kia Sorento. Designed with serious SUV lovers who desire more space and more options. As standard features, Kia installed some of the most innovative options all powered by a strong powertrain. Kia promotes the 2020 Telluride as a leader in the SUV market.

In comparison, we found an eight-passenger midsize SUV worthy of going head-to-head with Telluride, the 2019 Honda Pilot. The Pilot offers five trim levels. This year, Honda included more standard features than its previous year. For our comparison, we used the Pilot EX trim level to the Kia Telluride. The EX is Honda’s most popular package. The 2019 Honda Pilot offers many valuable benefits, which include keyless entry and ignition, temperature controlled front seats, slide-and-fold second-row seats, and tech features other trim levels don’t have.

Limited by the number of second-row captain’s chairs you order, the Telluride can be configured as a seven or eight-passenger SUV. Something most SUV owner’s look for is third-row head and leg-room. This is where the Telluride rouses the interest of larger families. Conversely, the Honda Pilot is very close to Telluride’s head and legroom. Although, both vehicles designed their third-row seating a bit tight. What undermines Honda’s comfort is its lower-mounted seats. They put passengers in an awkward and uncomfortable seating position.

All-wheel drive Drive Type All-wheel drive
8 Seating Capacity 8
21.0 Cargo Capacity (cubic feet) 16.5

Ranking cargo space between these vehicles, with the third-row seating down, the Telluride has 21.0 cubic feet where the Pilot has 16.0 cubic feet. Midsized SUVs of this size should have ample cargo space behind the second-row, but Honda doesn’t make the grade. Honda is known for its clever use of compartments, but they don’t compare to the open area in the Telluride.

Telluride’s 291 horsepower is not the highest, but it is the most efficient for its class. Our review found its base curb weight to be lighter than most, thus its city and highway road performance is exceptional for acceleration and handling. The Pilot comes close with 280 horsepower, and its 6-speed automatic includes a manual shifting mode for improved performance and handling on slippery roads.

EPA estimates for the Telluride averages 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive estimates are lower at 19 mpg city, 24 highway, and 21 combined. The Honda Pilot rolls in at 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined.
