Apple iPhone iOS 12 and Apple CarPlay

If you’re running iOS 12, you should have noticed you’re able to use Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze in Apple CarPlay.

In order to ensure you have access to this feature, please check the following:

  • your iPhone is up to date with iOS 12 or later
  • Google Maps or Waze apps are updated to the latest version. Apple Maps is automatically updated with iOS 12.

If the apps are not on the first page of the Apple CarPlay screen. You may configure the Apple CarPlay home screen by doing the following:

  • Open the Settings menu on the iPhone
  • Select General → CarPlay → “vehicle”

Touch and hold any icon on the screen, then drag to the desired location

Please note that Siri does not integrate into Google Maps or Waze. While in Apple CarPlay, pressing the Voice Recognition hard key to give navigation commands will only work with Apple Maps. In order to use Voice Recognition on Google Maps and Waze, press the on-screen Microphone button.

Bluetooth

After the initial iOS 12 update, the Bluetooth icon may no longer appear at the top of the phone screen. Bluetooth may be active and connected; however, this icon is no longer used to confirm Bluetooth status. In order to verify Bluetooth connection status on the iPhone:

Select Settings → Bluetooth → locate the vehicle name under “My Devices” and confirm the connection status.

In addition to this, some customers have experienced Bluetooth connectivity concerns after updating to iOS 12.0 and later versions. Basic recommendations to improve Bluetooth connectivity are shown below:

  • On the phone, toggle Bluetooth off then back on
  • Restart the iPhone
  • Delete the iPhone from the UVO or Base audio system and the car system from the phone and perform a fresh pairing
  • Reset the head unit by pressing the reset button with a paperclip or pen
